Sinopsis
This book introduces concepts that are basic to the study of language, which are meant to guide students to further persuits in more advanced analyses of language. For this purpose, it covers topics which they may have to explore and discuss either in class meetings or outside the classroom.
Among these are topics related to the concept of linguistics as the scientific study of language, the understanding of language as an object of study, characteristics of language, and the relationship of linguistics to language teaching. Basic concepts in linguistic analysis are also introduced to prepare students to deal with tasks in analyzing language relevant to their program in EFL teacher education. A review of major schools of linguistics is included to the extent that it brings awareness to the students of the variability of the ways language is viewed and analyzed by different linguists. Discussions on linguistic substudies and linguistic research appear in the last few chapters of the book.
